Light of the old vision organization(LOVO) started as a ministry in the year 2013 mainly helping the elderly. LOVO was conceived after an assessment of the needs of the aged persons in our local Mt. Kenya community in Gatanga Constituency and noticed some of their biggest challenges as finance and lack of resources/materials constructs proper homes/shelters.
The ministry has been distributing relief food to the elderly and orphans in the area. LOVO has positively impacted the community socially, economically and spiritually. We have been able to improve the quality of life for most of our members who hail from the rural areas. Light of the old vision organization is now a registered community based organization.
VISION ORIGIN
"It is after staying with my aged mother-in-love and I saw how she was treated under the hands of the care givers, she was mistreated and missed meals.
None of us as her children were near because of our busy schedules. Despite observing the hardship she was enduring I had no control, because in African culture when you are married you have very minimal input in the family, I also saw it with my own mother care givers were horrible and before it was known, she was already abused and harassed, so I birthed this vision in pain and felt I would like to take care for the elderly, to feed them, to build a home for them to offer them comfort and shelter.
My family, that is my husband and children have been my support pillars in assisting in borrowing food and clothes from our friends to add on whatever little I have. Young women have also been instrumental in volunteering to cook for the elderly. We normally bring them together in churches, we give ready food and 2 kg of maize flour, a bar of soap, 1 kg of rice or whatever else we may afford; for those who cannot manage to walk because of age or illness we go door to door, giving food, washing their clothes, fetching water for their domestic use (in most areas, the aged do not have access to tap water). We also do general cleaning, including cleaning the environment, disinfecting against jiggers and bedbugs.
We also offer psychosocial support by encouraging them by letting them narrate stories old days gone, their experiences, we share their fears and worries. For those who request prayers, we pray with them but we don't interfere with their faith. Currently my area of operation is Muranga county, mostly Gatanga and some parts of maragwa and Kiambu county mainly Thika town" ~ Rev Susan Mary, Vision Bearer
VISION
To provide due care for the life of the helpless and destitute who give old aged persons in the society and even those aged persons neglected by the family and do not get proper care due to poverty so that they live as valued members of the society within a peace of mind before going to their eternal home.
GOAL
To ensure a sound and friendly environment for the poor helpless and destitute old aged persons towards achieving a promising peaceful conditions for them fostering their physical, mental, social and spiritual development and well-being as well.
VISION BEARER : Rev Susan Mary
There is a trend of abandoning elderly persons by their children, the community and other family members. They are also left out in developmental activities in the area. LOVO was conceived and designed in such a way of addressing the elderly persons psychological, economic and physical problems.
Together with well-wishers and community stakeholders, we are planning to build a home for the old at Muranga village and roll-out supportive programme where they will be getting all the basic needs i.e.shelter, clothing food and security. We shall also go further and introduce clinical or nursing support.
